The Gold Star Memorial Monuments are due to the hard work and dedication of Medal of Honor recipient Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams. Woody a retired United States Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He is also the last surviving recipient of the Medal of Honor from that battle.
Today, Woody’s vision is honoring and paying tribute to these Gold Star Families “for their sacrifice of one of their loved ones has become a reality”. Currently his foundation has dedicated 19 memorial monuments, in 34 different states, and another 43 memorial monuments in progress. Thank you for all you do, and your military service! It was a pleasure meeting you!
